View listingNo introduction needed as far as what to expect from the world-renowned city offering the very best in retail, dining and property. Perhaps lesser known, the luxury shopping and retail area is known as the Beverly Hills Triangle. Every major luxury brand showcase their latest line of products, trends and styles at these flagship stores. Speckled within the retail are staple fine dining restaurants that have catered to the locals and visitors for decades, juxtaposed with trendy and more ambitious modern affairs.
The triangle sits at the bottom of the city limits. South of Wilshire Blvd on Beverly Drive, is the local high-street filled with eateries, boutiques and every day businesses.North, towards the hills lie the flats of Beverly Hills where the opulent homes begin. The flats lie within the city limits of Beverly Hills. The entertainment and business history is rich here, and while the homes are beautiful and extravagant, most are not gated and don’t have elevation and views. Although more visible and accessible, the neighbourhood remains one of the most incredibly distinct and charming in the world. The large estates, are found north of Sunset Blvd, in the hills. Known as the Beverly Hills Post Office area, it shares the famous 90210 postal code, but geographically lies within the Los Angeles city limits. This distinction holds no baring on property value. Various pockets and trends are found here and the level of extravagance ranges from the historical 15,000 square foot estates on Benedict Canyon, the modern Trousdale estates with city views and glass walls, all the way to the palatial compounds with private driveways. For many, the only hint of their existence are large iron gates from the street level. Unless you’re privy, your imagination will have to do the rest.
Originally a Spanish ranch settled by Maria Rita Quinteros de Valdez and her husband in 1828. They called their 4,500 acres of property the Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas.
In 1854, she sold the ranch to Benjamin Davis Wilson and Henry Hancock. By the 1880s, the ranch had been subdivided into parcels of 75 acres and was being rapidly bought up by Anglos from Los Angeles and the East coast.
Hotelier and agricultural property owners Henry Hammel and Andrew H. Denker acquired most of it and used it for farming lima beans. At this point, the area was known as the Hammel and Denker Ranch.
In 1900, a group of investors formed the Amalgamated Oil Company, bought the Hammel and Denker ranch, and began looking for oil. They did not find enough to exploit commercially, and In 1906, they reorganized as the Rodeo Land and Water Company, renamed the property “Beverly Hills,” subdivided it, and began selling lots. The development was named “Beverly Hills” after Beverly Farms in Beverly, Massachusetts, and because of the hills in the area. The first house in the subdivision was built in 1907, although sales remained slow.
Burton Green, oilman and real estate developer, began construction on The Beverly Hills Hotel in 1911. The hotel was finished in 1912. The visitors drawn by the hotel were inclined to purchase land in Beverly Hills, and by 1914 the subdivision had a high enough population to incorporate as an independent city.
In 1925, oilman Edward L. Doheny finished construction of Greystone Mansion, a 55-room mansion meant as a wedding present for his son Edward L. Doheny, Jr. The house is now owned by the city of Beverly Hills
In 1956, Paul Trousdale, a real estate developer, purchased the grounds of the Doheny Ranch and developed it into the Trousdale Estates, convincing the city of Beverly Hills to annex it.
After the rise of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, the neighborhood became home to the elaborate mansions of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Curtis, Ray Charles, President Richard Nixon, and more recently, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lawrence, Lionel Richie, Adele, Taylor Swift, Denzel Washington, Ellen DeGeneres and many more.
