View listingAbout the area
Santa Monica.
The history of Santa Monica begins with the native Tongva people. The Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola camped there in 1769. The city’s name derives from the Christian saint, Monica. The condensed and very abridged version of its history includes a railroad connecting the city to Los Angeles, A Japanese fishing village, the Douglas Aircraft Company plant that thrived during World War II, and the Santa Monica (10) Freeway completion in 1966 to connect the city to the rest of Los Angeles. The city incorporated in 1886, where it remains today; fiscally separated from the City of Los Angeles.
Santa Monica today is a tourist, production, tech, and lifestyle hub. Tourists and locals flock to the retail shopping, beach attractions, nightlife, restaurants and bars. Companies such as Hulu and TaskUS have taken up residence there. Tech Giants Facebook, YouTube and Google are in the neighbouring Playa Vista development.
Property wise, the area is a mix of rentals, luxury rentals, and high-end homes. The closer to the beach, the higher the price, however, the residential areas enjoy great walkability to the various retail and commerce areas. If you’re not in a beach front luxury and full-service building, or a small estate directly off Pacific Coast Highway with direct ocean views, “north of Montana” (avenue) is where the homes start to get exciting. A mix of Spanish, traditional, and now modern homes are spread throughout the city. While the average property size lean on the smaller side due to the increased price per foot, there are several estates and ocean-view compounds high-end buyers will want to view. Prices range from $1-4m condos, bungalow style homes for $3m, all the way up to $20m+ estates.
